Akiko Ken Made
Akiko is of Japanese origin, graduated from Nihon University and worked for several years as a cabinetmaker in Japan, before moving to Denmark to study at the School of Architecture in Aarhus. Akiko has worked tirelessly to perfect her technical mastery and design of wooden objects, seeking to explore and utilise the potential and capabilities of natural wood. She often creates objects whose utilitarian value adds to their obvious design.
In Akiko's work, there are small, clever, subtle and often underestimated details.
But for her, quality is essential: her works have an unparalleled level of finish and are irresistible to the touch.
Ken's interest in woodworking came naturally because his parents worked in furniture making. He honed his skills at PP Møbler - a high quality workshop where many Hans J Wegner pieces are made. Taking a perfectionist approach, he continued his studies with long internships with Japanese master cabinetmakers. Ken likes to challenge himself and think about wood to create works of extreme delicacy.
Akiko Kuwahata and Ken Winther share their professional and private lives; they live a few kilometres north of Copenhagen and work in their studio built in the middle of their garden.
